Recent years have seen
a sustained revival of the work of Terence Rattigan. New
productions have been greeted with surprised delight that
the acknowledged master of the 'well made play' can continue
to provoke such powerful emotions. As Rattigan himself wrote
'I believe that the best plays are about people, and not
about things'. This volume is one of a series of new editions
of his most enduring work. Each has an authoritative and
up-to-date introduction, biographical sketch and chronology.
Recently filmed by David
Mamet with Jeremy Northam as the barrister and Nigel Hawthorne
as the boy's father, THE WINSLOW BOY is based on a real
life court case of a young navel cadet unjustly accused
of stealing a five shilling postal order. First stages in
1946 and famously filmed with Robert Donat in the lead,
the play has been revived many times since. Reviewing a
1994 revival, The Sunday Times wrote: 'This is
as well-made play as you will find anywhere'. But the play
also handles its theme of justice with impressive emotional
moral intensity.
